The History of Hunger Plus
Hunger Plus was born because starving people in a remote region of Mexico found compassionate people in Texas willing to help them in their time of need.
The Tarahumara Indians live in scattered villages in Central Mexico. The land is rugged, and in recent years water has been scarce. Crop failures have led to hunger, and hunger has led to starvation. Fortunately, the Tarahumara found a spokesperson. Ms. Eloisa Moya plead the Tarahumara case before Texas Rotarians assembled to hear Rotary leaders speak about service. The result was immediate contributions to sponsor shipments of food from another Rotary supported project (Breedlove Dehydrated Foods in Lubbock, Texas) to the Tarahumara. Rotary International Presidents Clifford L. Dochterman, James Lacy, and Glen Kinross saw the potential for additional projects and the governors of all eight Texas Rotary Districts decided to support the formation of a new organization to offset hunger. Hunger Plus was born. A leader in this effort was the governor of District 5730, J.B. Roberts of Plainview, who continues to serve the needs of hungry people as Chairman of Hunger Plus, Inc. Since 1997 Hunger Plus, and now Hunger Plus, Inc. has conducted projects on every continent except Antarctica. While there remains a close association with Rotary, Hunger Plus, Inc. is not an official Rotary program. Hunger Plus, Inc. works with numerous civic, religious and private groups and individuals to reduce hunger.
